NABI KIBUNGUCHY: My Love for My Motherland Kenya
Joining the Kenyan National team, Harambee Stars, was an incredible achievement in my football journey. It meant the world to me, as it was the fulfilment of a lifelong aspiration. Standing there, draped in the national colours, the sound of the anthem reverberating through the stadium, I couldn’t help but be filled with reflection on the incredible journey that led me to this very moment.
But that was the culmination of a long journey. I spent my childhood in Sacramento, California, with a football always by my side and aspirations of achieving great success. Growing up with parents who immigrated from Kenya, I was fortunate to be raised with a strong appreciation for my heritage and a genuine passion for the game I love. From the first informal games in the backyard to the cherished moments of watching Arsenal matches with my dad, football has always held a special place in my heart. It has been more than just a sport to me; it has become a way of life.
My football journey started with those casual kickabouts in the backyard, but it was watching Arsenal matches alongside my dad that truly sparked my love for the game. From a young age, I found myself fully engrossed in recreational teams, constantly working to improve my skills and nurturing my passion for the sport.
The experiences I had at Sacramento Republic, UC Davis, and San Francisco Glens played a crucial role in shaping both my skills as a player and my character as an individual. Every experience presented unique obstacles and victories, motivating me to develop and mature in all aspects of my life.
I reached the highest point of my journey when I received the invitation to join Minnesota United in the MLS. It was an incredible moment, the result of years of unwavering effort and commitment. Stepping onto the pitch as a professional footballer was a dream come true—one that I still hold dear with every match.
Embarking on the journey into MLS Next Pro brought forth a range of fresh possibilities and obstacles to navigate. Being one of the more experienced players on the team, I wholeheartedly embraced my role as a leader, constantly striving to inspire my teammates through my actions both on and off the pitch. Every game presents an opportunity for me to showcase my abilities and make a meaningful impact on the team’s achievements.
Being able to represent the Kenyan National team, Harambee Stars was a dream that meant the world to me. Playing for my country meant so much more to me than just a chance. It was a precious opportunity to reconnect with my Kenyan roots and pay tribute to my heritage. As I stood on that field, donning the national colours, an overwhelming sense of pride and purpose washed over me, unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
As I move forward on this path, I am aware that there will be obstacles to face and accomplishments to pursue. I am fully dedicated to making the most of every opportunity that comes my way, whether it’s pursuing opportunities abroad or contributing to the national team’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Starting in Sacramento and eventually representing my country on the world stage, I am truly grateful for every step of this amazing journey. As I gaze into the future, I am filled with hope, determination, and an unyielding passion for the game I love.
