FKF Amends Electoral Code on Eligibility
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has revised its Electoral Code to align with recommendations from the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) during the last elections.
The Tribunal had raised concerns about the eligibility criteria outlined in the code, deeming it restrictive and contrary to the principles of fair competition.
Under the 2019-20 FKF Electoral Code, candidates were required to have been actively involved in football—whether as an NEC member, committee member, referee, coach, or in any other technical, medical, or administrative role within FKF, a league, or a club—for three of the four years preceding their candidacy.
This requirement has now been amended, following a proposal by Tusker FC chairman Charles Gacheru, to reduce the active involvement period to two of the last five years.
“We want an open election. We don’t want unnecessary complications. In two days, you’ll receive the updated electoral code and the proposed amendments,” said outgoing FKF President Nick Mwendwa during the much-anticipated FKF AGM held on Saturday.
Mwendwa, who is expected to seek re-election, though he has not officially announced his candidacy, urged aspirants to campaign without disrupting football activities.
“I’m encouraging members to campaign by showing how they can do better than those currently in office, including myself. But let’s ensure football continues smoothly during this period,” he said.
The FKF elections have been delayed due to ongoing court cases. According to Mwendwa, FIFA has mandated that the elections must be held by the end of this year.
