The Central Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) captured their first Cecafa Zonal Qualifiers title in four years by edging out debutants Kenya Police Bullets 1-0 in the final. The victory not only secured the title but also earned CBE a spot in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League group stage.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 79th minute when Senaf Waquma, who emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, found the back of the net. After dominating play throughout, CBE finally broke the deadlock with Waquma slotting in a well-placed pass from Aregash Kalsa, who had combined with Mesey Temesgan to create the chance. The match was held at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in Addis Ababa, where the home crowd cheered on their team.

Kenya Police Bullets started the match with early pressure, creating a significant opportunity when Puren Alukwe shot wide in the first 12 minutes. CBE responded with Waquma hitting the post in the 22nd minute, and just before halftime, Nigistu Hailu’s goal was disallowed for offside, keeping the score level at the break.

In the second half, CBE continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded with Waquma’s winning goal. Kenya Police Bullets’ best chance came from a free-kick by Lydia Akoth, but they were unable to equalize. Waquma nearly doubled the lead in the dying minutes, but missed a close-range effort with only the goalkeeper to beat.

CBE’s triumph follows several near misses in recent years, including final losses in 2021 and 2023, and a runner-up finish in 2022. With this victory, CBE joins past Cecafa champions Vihiga Queens, Simba Queens, and JKT in representing the region at the CAF Women’s Champions League group stage.
