CAF CL: Gor Mahia Seek Miracle Against Al Ahly SC in Cairo

Gor Mahia will lock horns with African giants Al Ahly SC in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round two clash at Cairo International Stadium on Friday night. With a daunting 3-0 deficit from the first leg in Nairobi, the odds are heavily stacked against the Kenyan champions.

Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm (EAT), with fans able to stream the match live on their devices. The Green Army faithful will be hoping for a miracle, but overcoming the reigning African champions on their home turf remains an uphill task.

The Kenyan side will need to produce a performance of historic proportions to overturn the first-leg loss, which left many of their supporters stunned at Nyayo Stadium. Al Ahly’s precision and ruthlessness were on full display, with South African winger Percy Tau capitalizing on defensive errors to net a brace. Gor Mahia’s backline, particularly under pressure from the intense atmosphere, crumbled as defensive adjustments made by Coach Neiva Leo failed to hold.

Despite the setback, K’Ogalo showed flashes of brilliance, especially through Ghanaian midfielder Enock, whose commanding presence in the middle of the park offered a glimmer of hope. His creativity and vision were among the few positives to take from a night otherwise dominated by the visitors. Reflecting on the defeat, Coach Neiva vowed that Gor Mahia would not abandon their attacking philosophy. “We’ll stick to our style of football. Whether we win, draw, or lose, we’ll fight until the end. We’re coming to play—not sit back,” the Brazilian tactician declared defiantly.

However, Neiva has come under criticism for altering his defensive setup, a move many felt disrupted the team’s cohesion and led to avoidable mistakes. Al Ahly’s ability to exploit these weaknesses highlights the tactical superiority of the Egyptian outfit, who have won a record 11 Champions League titles.

To complicate matters further, reports of internal unrest have surfaced from Gor Mahia’s camp in Cairo. According to an anonymous source, Ronney Onyango stormed out of a training session after a disagreement over his new attacking role. The player, usually deployed as a fullback, is said to be unhappy with the positional shift, though it’s unclear if this disciplinary issue will affect his participation in tonight’s match.

Additionally, there are concerns about the goalkeeping department. Kevin Omondi, who was criticised for his shaky performance in the first leg, is expected to be replaced by Gad Mathews. Mathews, a former Sofapaka FC standout, has been nursing a shoulder injury, raising doubts about his fitness for such a high-stakes encounter.

Gor Mahia’s last outing to Cairo in 2019 resulted in a 4-0 defeat to Al Ahly’s fierce rivals, Zamalek SC, in the CAF Confederation Cup. The memories of that crushing loss linger, and K’Ogalo will need to shake off any psychological scars if they are to stand a chance against an Al Ahly side brimming with confidence. The Egyptian club is coming off the back of another dominant domestic season, having clinched their latest Egypt Premier League title. In a special ceremony following CAF’s approval, Al Ahly will be presented with the league trophy after tonight’s match, adding another layer of pressure on the visitors, who face a fired-up crowd at the Cairo International Stadium.

As Gor Mahia prepares for what many see as a near-impossible task, they will need more than tactical adjustments—they will need to summon their fighting spirit and deliver a flawless performance to make history in African football.
