AFCON2025Q: Omija Out of Namibia Game, Eyes Quick Return for CAF Champions League
Harambee Stars defender Alphonce Omija will miss the team’s AFCON 2025 Qualifier fixture against Namibia on Tuesday after sustaining a knee injury during the opener against Zimbabwe.
Speaking on his condition, Omija reassured fans, saying, “I got a knee injury against Zimbabwe and came back to Nairobi as the team proceeded to South Africa. I have, however, done MRI tests and ascertained that it was just a knock, nothing serious.”
Omija has already started physiotherapy and is optimistic about his recovery.
“I should be okay to play for my club, Gor Mahia, on Sunday against Al Ahly,” he added, signalling a potential return for the CAF Champions League round of 32 clash.

The Gor Mahia defender, who did not travel with the team to South Africa, played a key role in Harambee Stars’ scoreless draw against Zimbabwe before being replaced by Amos Nondi. His absence from the Namibia game marks a setback for coach Engin Firat, as Stars prepare for their second Group J match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Omija’s presence in Gor Mahia’s backline has been pivotal this season, freeing Rooney Onyango to push forward. His recovery will be crucial as K’Ogalo face Africa champions Al Ahly SC of Egypt at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.
