A point is better than nothing: Tusker’s Okere after KCB draw

Tusker head coach Charles Okere picked the positive side of events, as he remained thankful for the single point gained in the club’s 0-0 draw with KCB in Machakos on Sunday. The Brewers would have flown top of the pile had they beaten the Bankers after Police FC had been held by Sofapaka earlier on, but they point meant the status quo at the top remained.

Okere said they were not efficient offensively, but praised the team’s defensive display.

“We have to be thankful for the point because in another case it would have been different. We were very solid defensively today and we ensured we cut out KCB’s strengths especially with the crosses. Our keeper also made some good saves,” Okere said after the game.

He added; “We were not sharp offensively and this is one of the things we have to work on before our next match. We have to be quicker and more efficient especially in transition.”

Tusker had some chances in the opening half, Ryan Ogam finding space to dribble from the middle of the pack, but his eventual left footer evaded the target by a whisker. Eric Balecho also had a good opportunity when he rifled a shot from distance, but it was blocked for a corner that was eventually cleared.

On the other end, the bankers also had some good opportunities, keeper Brian Opondo making a brilliant save to deny Faraj Ominde’s shot on the volley.

Collins Odhiambo also made a vital goalline clearance, heading the ball away after Francis Kahiro had beaten Opondo to the ball from a cross.

In the second half, coach Charles Okere made a change, bringing in Dennis Iguma for his debut to replace Dennis Oguta. The change saw him sit at the base of midfield with Chris Erambo and David Odoyo moving up.

The team still had some chances with Ogam seeing his well curled freekick blocked by the wall while Odoyo had a shot from distance fly wide.

On the other end, Opondo once again pulled off a great reflex save to pluck away Patrick Otieno’s deflected shot.

Alex Onchwari, who was making his debut had a brilliant outing, cutting off the KCB supply from out wide. Late on, he made a brilliant block from close range to deny Michael Mutinda’s shot.
