Goals Flow in FKFPL Week 3, but Shabana Fans Tarnish the Weekend

Goals rained as the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) 2024-25 season entered Week 3.

In seven fixtures, a total of 18 goals were scored, resulting in four wins and three scoring draws.

AFC Leopards finally broke their winless streak, edging out Bidco United 1-0 at a dilapidated Thika Stadium to end a four-game run without a victory, consisting of three losses and one draw.

Kariobangi Sharks and KCB emerged as the biggest winners, both securing 3-0 victories against Murang’a Seal and Posta Rangers, respectively.

Tusker FC, the 13-time champions, failed to win for the second consecutive match after settling for a 2-2 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz. The Brewers had previously lost 3-2 to Kariobangi Sharks.

While Mathare United are still searching for their first win after a 1-1 draw against Sofapaka, fellow newcomers Mara Sugar FC bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars, marking their second win of the season. The Millers had narrowly lost by the same margin in their previous fixture against Bandari FC.

However, the weekend’s excitement was overshadowed by acts of hooliganism from Shabana FC fans. Having brought color to the game in past weeks, their behavior turned destructive when they uprooted seats at Ulinzi Sports Complex following Glen Peter’s 95th-minute equalizer for Ulinzi Stars in a 2-2 draw.

In a country where proper sports facilities are already lacking, it is crucial that the existing ones are protected and not vandalized. To set a good example, the relevant authorities must act swiftly and hold Shabana FC accountable for their fans’ actions.

The league’s credibility was further diminished at Thika Stadium, where AFC Leopards and Bidco United players were forced to use open grass as their changing rooms. It raises concerns as to why such facilities are approved to host top-flight matches.
