Harambee Stars Kick Off 2025 AFCON Qualifying Campaign Against Zimbabwe

Last Updated: September 6, 2024By 279 words1.4 min read

Kenya’s journey to return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after last appearing in Egypt in 2019, begins today (Friday) when they face Zimbabwe in their first qualifier for the 2025 tournament at Nelson Mandela Stadium, Kampala, Uganda.

The Harambee Stars are in Group J alongside five-time champions Cameroon, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Like Zimbabwe, Kenya was excluded from the last AFCON qualifiers due to a FIFA ban over government interference.

The fixture against Zimbabwe’s Warriors will be played in neighbouring Uganda since Kenya lacks a CAF-approved stadium. Kenya’s Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums are currently under renovation, preparing for the 2027 AFCON, which Kenya will host jointly with Uganda and Tanzania under the EA Pamoja initiative.

Preparations

Harambee Stars arrived in Kampala on Sunday to acclimatise and prepare adequately. France-based defender Joseph Okumu and offensive midfielder Eric Johana were the last to join coach Engin Firat’s team.

However, skipper Michael Olunga will miss the match due to injury, with Okumu expected to wear the captain’s armband. Defender Johnstone Omurwa is also unavailable as he reportedly seeks a move to Saudi Arabia.

Benson Omala, this season’s FKF Premier League top scorer, is doubtful due to injury following his recent transfer to Lebanon’s Safa Sporting Club. Firat, however, will rely on forward Jonah Ayunga from Scottish Premiership side St. Mirren.

Super Record

Kenya can take inspiration from their recent form against Zimbabwe, having beaten them twice this year, scoring five goals and conceding just once. Overall, Kenya has won seven, drawn four, and lost just once in their last twelve encounters.
