This past weekend saw a range of notable performances from Kenyan players across various competitions. Clyde Senaji delivered a standout performance for Nyasa Big Bullets, while Anthony Akumu and Duke Abuya made strong starts with their new clubs. Clyde Senaji

Clyde Seneji played the full 90 minutes as his Malawian side, Nyasa Big Bullets, rallied to defeat visiting Zambian champions Red Arrows 2-1 in the African Champions League preliminary round first leg at Bingu National Stadium on Sunday.

Red Arrows took the lead through Ricky Banda in the 57th minute, but Babatunde Adepoju equalised for the Team of the People in the 77th minute. Precious Phiri then scored the winner with eight minutes remaining.

Nyasa Big Bullets will travel to Lusaka for the return match on Sunday.

Anthony Akumu

It was a positive start for former Gor Mahia midfielder Anthony Akumu, who also played the full 90 minutes as his new side, Kheybar Khorramabad, edged out Havandar SC 1-0 in the opening week of the Persian Gulf Pro League on Friday.

Mehrdad Ghanbari scored the only goal in the 64th minute, ensuring the newly promoted side began their top-flight campaign on a high note.

After a long spell without a club following his departure from Japanese side Sagan Tosu in December last year, Akumu signed a one-year, renewable deal with Kheybar Khorramabad. This move was praised by Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat, who continued to include Akumu in the national team despite his long absence from club football. Akumu has repaid that faith with commendable performances.

Duke Abuya

Former Kariobangi Sharks offensive midfielder Duke Abuya was a second-half substitute as his new club, Yanga SC, defeated Vital ‘O FC of Burundi 4-0 in the CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg fixture in Bujumbura on Saturday.

Abuya has impressed Yanga SC’s Argentine coach, Miguel Ángel Gamondi, since joining from Singida Black Stars in July and has been receiving playing time.

The player has been instrumental for the record Tanzanian champions, helping them win several accolades during preseason, including the Ngao Ya Jamii and the Toyota Cup in South Africa.

Timothy “Babu” Ouma

Former Nairobi City Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma was sent off in the 69th minute as Swedish top-tier side Elfsborg drew 1-1 with Mjallby on Sunday afternoon.

Ghanaian centre-back Terry Yegbe opened the scoring for Elfsborg in the 16th minute, but Herman Johansson equalised 10 minutes later.

Following this result, Elfsborg are now seventh in the league with 29 points from 19 games.
