Marrakech Motocross: Kenya Racks Up Podium Wins in MX50 and MX65
Atete Benzinge led Kenya’s charge at the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations (MXOAN) in Marrakech, Morocco, finishing third in the WMX Class. She was bested by Zambia’s Leah Heygate and South Africa’s Mienke Cawood. Despite being Kenya’s only rider in the WMX category, Atete’s strong performance helped the team secure fourth place overall in the class.
Team Kenya celebrated three podium finishes during the event. In the MX50 female class, Chiara Hatanga placed second, coming in behind Uganda’s Hellena Ainomugisha. In the MX1 category, Kenya’s captain Apollo Mbuki finished ninth, while Morocco’s Saad Soulmani dominated the competition, winning all three heats.
Fredrick Yongo represented Kenya in the MX Vets/Masters race, placing 12th as South Africa’s Craig Cruger took first. The MX50 category saw South African riders sweep the podium, with Joshua-Zion Naude taking the top spot. Jeremy Hawi Opudo was the best-placed Kenyan, finishing in sixth.
In the MX65 class, Kigen Mutuma was Kenya’s top rider, ending in sixth place. Other notable Kenyan participants included Dylan Hatanga in seventh, Jedd Hatanga in eighth, and Lemaiyan Muraya Mugo in ninth.
Kenya placed fourth overall in the competition. Uganda took second place with 479 points, following South Africa’s 586 points, while hosts Morocco finished third with 447 points.
A standout moment came from Zimbabwe’s Victor Nyamupfukudza, a 10-year-old rider who took second place overall in the 65cc class, behind South Africa’s Ohan Graven. The two-day MXOAN event saw over 200 riders from 10 countries compete, offering exciting racing action and showcasing talent across various motocross categories.
