Rooney Onyango, Gor Mahia’s versatile yet troubled player, remains sidelined as the club opens their 2024-25 FKF Premier League campaign against Mathare United at Machakos Stadium this afternoon.

Onyango, who missed K’Ogalo‘s CAF Champions League clash against Al Ahly SC last weekend due to reported indiscipline, continues to be excluded from the squad. “Rooney Onyango missed the game because of lack of commitment, behavior, and discipline. We are a team, and we need to work together for teamwork,” head coach Leo Neiva stated.

According to sources, the former Wazito FC defender stormed out of a training session in Cairo, refusing to follow the coach’s summons afterward. Frustrated by his shifting role in the squad, Onyango reportedly wants to stick strictly to his defensive position.

Onyango was also absent from yesterday’s training at Machakos, and it was confirmed this morning that he won’t feature in today’s match.

Gor Mahia, having been knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Al Ahly SC 6-0 on aggregate, missed the first three FKFPL matchdays. Kenya Police FC, also engaged in continental action, will start their season against Tusker FC on Sunday after a CAF Confederation Cup exit at the hands of Zamalek SC (3-1 on aggregate).
