Gor Mahia Eliminated from CAF Champions League After Heavy Loss to Al Ahly
Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia were knocked out of the CAF Champions League after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly in the second leg at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday. The result completed a 6-0 aggregate win for the Egyptian side, who had previously won 3-0 in Nairobi.
Al Ahly’s goals came courtesy of Rebi Salim, Wessam Abou, and Taher Mohammed, securing their place in the next stage of the competition. Gor Mahia, already facing an uphill battle after the first leg, struggled to gain a foothold in the game, missing key players like goalkeeper Kevin Omondi and Rooney Onyango.
The match began slower than expected, with neither team creating significant chances in the opening minutes. However, Al Ahly’s Percy Tau nearly broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when a long pass set him up for a one-on-one with Gor Mahia’s returning goalkeeper, Gad Mathews. Mathews did well to deny Tau and keep his side in the game.

Gor Mahia’s best opportunity in the first half came when Shariff Musa made a dangerous run into the opposition’s box after receiving a long ball from Mathews, but Al Ahly’s defence cleared the danger.
Al Ahly eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Rami Rabia was left unmarked to head home from a corner kick. The Egyptian side continued to press, but Mathews made several saves to keep Gor Mahia’s hopes alive.
In the second half, Gor Mahia struggled to deal with Al Ahly’s pace and intensity. The pressure paid off when Alpha Onyango’s misplaced pass allowed Yahya El Idrissi to set up Wessam Abou Ali for an easy tap-in in the 67th minute, doubling Al Ahly’s lead.
Gor Mahia’s defence faltered again in the 89th minute when Taher Mohammed broke through and scored from a tight angle, putting the game beyond doubt.
With their CAF Champions League campaign now over, Gor Mahia will turn their attention back to the FKF Premier League, as they aim to regroup and bounce back from the defeat.
