Gor, Leopards in Sunday action as 2024 FKF PL curtains close
Holders Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be in action on Sunday, in the last round of matches for the year in the FKF Premier League. Sixth placed Gor are looking to cash in on victory when they take on Kariobangi Sharks in Machakos, while Leopards will be in action down in Dandora as they take on Bandari FC in a high stakes duel.
Gor were in action in a catch up fixture against Ulinzi Stars in midweek, where they picked an emphatic 4-0 victory, and will look to make it back to back wins. Stand in coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, who is still auditioning to raise his hands for the head coach role, admits that his side is under pressure.
However, in an interview with Telecomasia.net, the tactician says he and his players can handle the pressure.
“Pressure is always part of this job of coaching Gor Mahia. It is a team of high demands. It is not just me who is under pressure but the team as well. But I am happy to see the players work well and to come out of pressure in every game. We have shown character. For us we just need to keep working,” Zico said.
This will be the 18th meeting between this two sides. In the 17 previous duels, Gor has only lost to Sharks four times, the last being in July 2021 when they won 2-1. Gor has won 11 of these fixtures. Last season, they swept the Sharks home and away.
Sharks have been struggling despite a strong start to the season, and have won only once in their last five games. They come into this match having lost last weekend away to Mara Sugar.
Gor will potentially skip to third if they win, if Bandari fail to get a result against AFC Leopards. The two sides lock horns in the late kick off in Dandora.
Leopards are eighth with 19 points, and victory will potentially lift them to fifth. Bandari on the other hand, are looking to keep pace with the leaders. They are on 21 points at third spot. A win takes them to 24, three behind leaders KCB and Tusker.
In other matches set for Sunday, struggling Ulinzi Stars host City Stars in the early kick off at Dandora, while in a simultaneous kick off in Machakos, FC Talanta take on Murang’a Seal.
