COSAFA CUP 2024: Kenya’s Emerging Stars Stunned by Comoros
Kenya’s Emerging Stars faced a setback in their journey towards the knockout stages of the ongoing COSAFA CUP after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Comoros on Sunday afternoon at the Wolfson Stadium, Ibhayi, South Africa, the
Kenya entered the match riding high on their impressive 2-0 victory over defending champions Zambia. However, their momentum was halted by a clinical Comoros side, who mirrored Kenya’s previous efficiency by converting two of their first three shots on target.
Affane Said Djambae emerged as the hero for Comoros, netting both goals and becoming the tournament’s top scorer. Djambae’s first goal came from a penalty in the 34th minute, following a foul by debutant Paul Ochuoga, who was sent off. Djambae capitalized on the numerical advantage again in the 48th minute, slotting home after a miscued shot fell into his path.
Despite relentless pressure from Comoros, Kenya’s defense, led by goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, managed to avoid further damage. Coach Ken Odhiambo attributed the loss to the red card and penalty, describing them as a “double tragedy.” He noted that the young team struggled to maintain their composure and shape after going down to ten men, resulting in missed opportunities in the latter stages of the match.
Odhiambo made a single change to the starting lineup from the Zambia match, replacing Geoffrey Onyango with Paul Ochuoga, a decision that ultimately proved costly. The first 20 minutes were marked by frantic play and opportunistic long-range shots from both sides, with early bookings for Ahmed Haslane of Comoros and Ochuoga.

Kenya’s best chance in the first half came in the 25th minute when Austin Odhiambo’s back-heel pass found Benson Omalla, who missed a clear opportunity. This miss foreshadowed Kenya’s struggles, as Comoros took control following Ochuoga’s sending off and Djambae’s subsequent penalty conversion.
Even with a man down, Kenya continued to push forward, nearly equalizing before halftime. However, Comoros sealed their victory early in the second half, with Djambae scoring his second goal. Despite continuous pressure, Kenya’s efforts to reduce the deficit were thwarted by Comoros’ resolute defense.
The defeat leaves Comoros and Kenya level on points in Group B, with Comoros ahead on goal difference. Kenya’s chances of advancing now depend on their performance against Zimbabwe in their final group match. With all teams potentially ending up on three points, the final outcomes in Group B are set to be highly competitive.
