Conduct of Gor Mahia’s Star Player Austin Odhiambo Under Scrutiny
Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo failed to travel for the 2024 CECAFA Club Championship in Dar es Salaam last month without providing a convincing reason.
“When asked why he stayed away from the team, he simply replied, ‘I was resting,’ yet he was seen playing in local village tournaments,” a source within Gor Mahia told Passion Sports anonymously to avoid controversy.
Crowned the 2023-24 FKF Premier League Most Valuable Player, the former AFC Leopards star has been linked with several potential moves, including to Europe. However, no concrete offers have been made. “The club has not received any offers for his services,” the source confirmed.

The player resumed training after missing the CECAFA Club Cup, but once again failed to join the team for their recent preseason tour in Tanzania, where Gor Mahia played two matches against Fountain Gate FC in Kwaraa.
“It’s a difficult situation we find ourselves in as management, and we may soon have to decide whether to take disciplinary action against the player,” the source added.
Despite his actions, Odhiambo continues to draw a salary from the club, as he is still under contract.
Interestingly, the player has been included in the Gor Mahia squad that will travel to Juba, South Sudan on Thursday for Sunday’s CAF Champions League preliminary round match against El Merreikh. It remains to be seen whether he will actually make the trip.
