CAF boss Motsepe to visit Kenya to assess CHAN preps
Patrice Motsepe, the Confederation of Africa (CAF) boss will visit Kenya on Friday, as part of a two-day East Africa tour to gauge the progress of facilities meant to host next year’s Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
President Motsepe will be in Kenya on Friday morning, arriving from Tanzania which will be his first stop in the inspection tour. He will be in Nairobi in the morning, before flying out to Kampala, Uganda, to conclude his two-day tour of duty.
“During his visit, Dr Motsepe will meet Governments, Football Leadership and Local Organising Committees from the three countries. The schedule of activities and meetings includes visits to the stadiums and training sites that are currently undergoing renovations ahead of next year’s competition,” a statement from CAF reads.
His visit comes at a time when Kenya’s preparedness for the event is continually falling on a tight weighing scale, with the two venues, Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, still a bit far off schedule.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the tournament, tailor-made for local-based players, between February 1-28.
Kenya recently inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) that will oversee the completion of works and the tournament next year.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen remains confident that Kenya will successfully host the tournament, despite tight timelines.
“We have a lot of work to do and that is why this LOC has a very huge responsibility. Even if it means working night and day, we have to meet the obligations that have been set. What we are going to do especially with Kasarani, is that we will complete the crucial aspects of the facility like the playing surface, dressing room and stands,” Murkomen said in an interview with Telecomasia.
He added; “There are other aspects of the stadium, part of the recommendations by CAF, that we might not finish now and do them later, but we can get alternatives, for example sound. We have had meetings with the contractors and we have agreed that all of us are going to give a push for this thing to happen.”
