AFCON 2025: Harambee Stars Face Must-Win Clash Against Zimbabwe
Harambee Stars’ hopes of securing a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hinge on a crucial encounter against Zimbabwe tonight in their Group J qualifier at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, South Africa.
Kenya must defeat Zimbabwe to stay in contention, followed by another win against Namibia on Tuesday. To boost their chances, Harambee Stars will also rely on Cameroon holding Zimbabwe to a draw or victory in their final group match.
The game takes place on neutral ground after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled Zimbabwe’s facilities unsuitable to host AFCON qualifiers, forcing the Warriors to adopt South Africa as their home base.
Kenya’s Road to AFCON
After missing out on AFCON 2023, Kenya began their 2025 campaign on a strong note, collecting four points in September. However, back-to-back defeats against Cameroon in October, including a 4-1 thrashing away and a 1-0 loss in their “home” match played in Uganda, left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
A loss to Zimbabwe tonight would officially end Kenya’s campaign, while a victory keeps them in the hunt for second place.
Under head coach Engin Firat, the team’s away record remains inconsistent, with five wins and five losses in their last 10 matches. However, Harambee Stars have never lost to Zimbabwe in five encounters, recording three wins and two draws. Across 11 total meetings, Zimbabwe’s only victory came in the 1985 CECAFA finals.
Zimbabwe’s Form and Challenges
Unbeaten in their four qualifiers so far, Zimbabwe have shown resilience under new coach Michael Nees, who took charge in July. Their back-to-back victories over Namibia last month cemented their position as group leaders.
Nees has prioritised defensive stability, with the Warriors conceding just one goal in the campaign. However, preparations for tonight’s match were disrupted by heavy rains in Polokwane, leaving their training pitch waterlogged on Wednesday.
Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe remain confident, with several players accustomed to South African conditions due to club commitments. “We’re in a good position but must avoid complacency,” Nees said. “This match is a chance to control our destiny, and I trust my team to deliver.”
Team Updates
Zimbabwe will be without Nantes forward Tino Kadewere due to injury, while Munashe Garananga’s fitness remains doubtful after missing Copenhagen’s last match in the Danish Superliga.
Kenya’s squad also features notable changes, with goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo replacing Patrick Matasi. Other absentees include Zak Vyner, Geoffrey Ochieng, Alphonce Omija, Sylvester Owino, and Chris Erambo. On the brighter side, Amos Wanjala has earned a call-up, adding fresh options for coach Firat.
The stage is set for a high-stakes battle, as Harambee Stars fight to keep their AFCON 2025 dream alive against an in-form Zimbabwe side determined to secure qualification.
