Police Left with Tough Task After Home Defeat to Zamalek
Mostafa Sayed’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory for Zamalek SC over Kenya Police FC in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round at Nyayo National Stadium. The result means Police now face an uphill battle in the return leg in Egypt next week.
Zamalek started strong, dominating possession and threatening early. Ahmed Mostafa won a free-kick in the third minute, though it wasn’t capitalised upon. Five minutes later, Police goalkeeper Patrick Matasi saved a clear chance from Mostafa.
The Egyptian side maintained control throughout the first half, pushing forward and creating multiple opportunities. Police, however, had their best chance in the 24th minute when Jaffary Owiti found himself one-on-one with Zamalek’s goalkeeper but missed the target.
Zamalek’s breakthrough came just before halftime when Abdalla Mohammad’s strike found the back of the net after a quick setup by Sayed.
In the second half, Police coach Anthony Kimani made changes to inject energy into the team, but Zamalek continued to control the pace. Alvin Mangeni came close to equalising in the 62nd minute, but his effort was cleared.
Despite some late pressure from Police, Zamalek’s defense held firm, securing the win. Police will need a significantly improved performance in the second leg if they hope to progress to the next stage of the competition.
