AFCON2025Q: Kenya Faces Namibia in Crucial AFCON Qualifier After Tough Start

Last Updated: September 10, 2024By 363 words1.8 min read

Namibia hosts Kenya’s Harambee Stars for Match Day 2 of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers in Group J at Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, this evening.

Like Kenya, Namibia lacks a CAF-approved stadium to host senior national team games and has chosen neighbouring South Africa as their temporary home ground.

After a frustrating 0-0 draw in their group opener against Zimbabwe’s Warriors on Friday in Kampala, Uganda, the Stars are hoping to secure their first win of the campaign.

However, based on recent history, coach Engin Firat’s side will need to tread carefully against the Southern Africans. The Stars have played Namibia four times in recent years, winning twice and losing twice. Both losses occurred in away matches.

Despite losing 1-0 to Cameroon in their first group match, Namibia has enjoyed some success on the continent, reaching the round of 16 in the last AFCON held in Ivory Coast.

Kenya, on the other hand, has been largely absent from the continental stage since their appearance at AFCON 2019 in Egypt and missed the previous qualifiers due to a FIFA ban.

Firat expects a tough match, especially with the absence of several key players, including captain Michael Olunga, who is out with an injury.

“I have to find solutions. Historically, Kenya has always struggled against Namibia. It’s a difficult situation, but we’re hopeful of a positive result,” Firat said.

The Turkish coach is wary of Namibia’s quick transition play, singling out Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shalulile as one of the key threats his team will need to manage.

Warriors coach Collin Benjaman, on his part, anticipates Kenya to play a counter-attacking game. Despite their 1-0 loss to Cameroon in Yaoundé, he believes his team performed well.

“The team is still strong. We defended well and created four chances. That’s a positive for me, and we hope to correct our mistakes before facing Kenya,” Benjaman said.

He expects an intriguing match, noting that both teams will fancy their chances. “We also expect them to be tactical, to sit deep and hit on the counter, which they’re good at.”
