Former FKF Women Premier League champions, Vihiga Queens, are set to host Ugandan and Tanzanian teams for their 10th-anniversary final celebrations, scheduled from September 5-7, 2024.

The matches will be held at the Mumias Complex in Kakamega County and will feature Tanzanian professional women’s football club Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT) Queens, based in Dar es Salaam, and Uganda’s Kampala Queens.

Vihiga Queens will kick off the celebrations by taking on Kampala Queens in the opening match and will later face JKT Queens in the final match. Kampala Queens and JKT Queens are also scheduled to go head-to-head during the event.

These matches are not just celebratory; they are also crucial preparations for Vihiga Queens as they aim to reclaim the Women Premier League (WPL) title, which they lost to Kenya Police DCI Bullets. The WPL season is set to commence on the weekend of September 14-15, 2024.

The 10th-anniversary celebrations began in mid-August at Kidundu Grounds, the team’s training facility in Vihiga County. As they prepare for this milestone event, it’s a reminder of Vihiga Queens’ remarkable journey since their founding in 2014.

Vihiga Queens have become one of Kenya’s most successful women’s football clubs, winning the Premier League title three consecutive times from 2017 to 2019. They added more victories in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, solidifying their status as the most successful club in Kenya.

Their 2019 league victory led to their selection as Kenya’s representative in the 2021 CECAFA qualifiers, where they triumphed over Ethiopian team CBE with a 2-1 victory in the final. This win qualified them for the inaugural 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League.
