Kevin Juma: A Star Fading at Gor Mahia – What’s Holding Him Back?
Kevin Juma, once hailed as one of the best midfielders in the Kenyan Premier League, has yet to find his footing at Gor Mahia. What’s gone wrong?
Juma was Johnathan McKinstry’s first major signing at the start of last season, joining Gor Mahia as a free agent after Nzoia Sugar FC’s relegation. At the time, the now 28-year-old was highly sought-after, with clubs like Kenya Police FC, Tusker FC, and Sofapaka all vying for his signature.

But since his big move to the record champions, the defensive midfielder has struggled to settle in Gor Mahia’s iconic green and white stripes. The recent appointment of Brazilian coach Leo Neiva, who succeeded McKinstry—now coaching The Gambia’s national team—presented Juma with a fresh start. However, the change has yet to spark a turnaround in his fortunes.
In Gor Mahia’s recent 5-1 victory over El Merreikh Bentiu of South Sudan, which secured their place in the CAF Champions League round of 32, Juma was notably absent.
“For us, every match, even a friendly, is like a final. If the coach gives you a chance and you don’t maximize it, breaking into the team becomes tough,” said Gor Mahia assistant coach Michael Nam in an interview with Passion Sports.
K’Ogalo boasts a wealth of talent in the midfield, including Ernest Wendo, Alpha Onyango, Lawrence Juma, and new signings Chris Akena and Enock Morrison. According to Nam, Juma’s lack of consistency could be his downfall.
“Our fans are very demanding, and players must perform at their peak all the time.”
Juma signed a five-year contract, meaning he still has four years remaining. “There were suggestions of loaning him out, but he chose to stay, so he’s still our player,” added Nam.
Juma now faces a critical juncture in his career: fight for his place or risk becoming another forgotten talent.
