Kenyan striker Benson Omala, was on the brink of joining Swedish top-tier side Vasteras SK but instead signed with Lebanon’s Safa Sporting Club after a proposed move to Sweden fell through.

The transfer has sparked considerable discussion in Kenya, particularly due to the security situation in Lebanon.

Omala, who recently parted ways with Gor Mahia, had received an official invitation from Vasteras SK for a trial with their first team, which competes in the Allsvenskan, the highest professional level in Sweden. The trial was set to take place from 1st to 31st August 2024.

“We would like to invite Oluoch Benson for a football trial with our first team currently competing in the Allsvenskan, the highest professional level in Sweden, for a period between 2024-08-01 and 2024-08-31,” read part of the invite from Vasteras SK, exclusively seen by Passion Sports.

The Swedish club had also assured Omala of comprehensive support during his stay, including accommodation, food, medical treatment, and insurance.

“Vasteras will be responsible for player accommodation, food, medical treatment, and insurance during his stay in Sweden,” the invite continued.

The invitation further outlined that Omala would train with Vasteras SK’s first team and might even participate in a friendly match to assess his abilities. In case of a failed trial or medical test, the club guaranteed his safe return to Kenya.

“During the trial, the player will train with Vasteras SK first team and possibly play a friendly game to evaluate his ability. If the player does not pass the medical test, and football trial in Sweden, the club will guarantee his immediate and safe return to his country of residence,” Vasteras SK stated in their communication.

However, despite the promising opportunity, the deal between Gor Mahia and Vasteras SK did not materialise. According to sources close to the negotiations, Gor Mahia was not prepared to release Omala, as they could not agree with the Swedish club on the transfer terms.

With the Swedish move off the table, Omala opted to sign with Lebanon’s Safa Sporting Club. The decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given the ongoing security concerns in Lebanon, which contrasts sharply with the stability and visibility of Swedish football.

The failed transfer to Sweden marks a missed opportunity for Omala, who could have gained significant exposure and experience in the Allsvenskan. Instead, the striker will now embark on a new chapter in the Lebanese Premier League, where he will face a different set of challenges.

Omala’s move to Safa SC is now official, and while his career continues abroad, many in Kenya will watch closely to see how the striker adapts to his new environment in Lebanon.
