Omala Departs for Lebanese Top Tier as Gor Mahia Gears Up for CAF Champions League
Benson Omala has sealed a move to Lebanese top-tier side Safa Sporting Club, according to media reports.
The Gor Mahia striker, who topped the FKF Premier League last season with 19 goals, was not part of the team’s recent preseason tour of Tanzania.
K’Ogalo traveled to Tanzania last week, playing back-to-back friendlies against Fountain Gate FC on Friday and Sunday.
Omala’s future at K’Ogalo has been uncertain, with several media reports linking him to a move away.
The former Western Stima FC forward was set to move to Algerian side JS Soura in February this year, but the transfer fell through, with his representatives blaming the club.
Safa Sporting Club is a football club based in Wata El Msaytbeh, a district in Beirut, Lebanon, that competes in the Lebanese Premier League.
Founded in 1939, they have won three league titles, three domestic cups, one Super Cup, and two Elite Cups; they also reached the 2008 AFC Cup final.
Gor Mahia are currently preparing for the CAF Champions League preliminary round, where they will face El Merreikh Juba on Sunday in the first leg.
In anticipation of Omala’s exit, the club signed Congolese striker Gedeon Bandeka and Samuel Kapen from Nairobi City Stars.
Also on his way out of Gor Mahia is creative midfielder Austin Odhiambo. The former AFC Leopards player was crowned the best player in the FKF Premier League last season.
He has reportedly attracted an offer from Belgium.
