Day 5 offers Kenya the chance to leave behind the miseries of Day 4 as Beatrice Chebet, Faith Kipyegon, and Margaret Chelimo take to the purple track of the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Paris.

On Monday night at 10:15 pm EAT, they will compete in the women’s 5,000 metres final, an event in which Kenya last failed to win a medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Chebet, the record holder in the women’s 10,000 metres, and Kipyegon, the record holder in the women’s 1,500 metres, are in great form, raising hopes of continuing the medal-winning trend and possibly securing Kenya’s second-ever gold medal in this event, following Vivian Cheruiyot’s success at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Mary Moraa will be the only Kenyan in the women’s 800 metres final, which starts at 10:47 pm EAT. Moraa aims to add an Olympic gold medal to her world title from the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, a feat that would make her the second Kenyan woman to win this event at the Olympics since Pamela Jelimo in 2008.

As Kenyans hope for medals from this quartet, the nation will also be looking to other athletes to progress in their heats. Wiseman Were will be the first Kenyan to compete this morning, aiming for the semifinal of the men’s 400 metres hurdles. Were will run in Heat Four, which starts at 11:29 am EAT.

Following him, Abraham Kibiwot, Amos Serem, and Simon Koech will aim to restore Kenya’s dominance in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase. The heats for this event will begin in the evening, with Amos Serem competing in Heat One at 8:04 pm EAT, Abraham Kibiwot in Heat Two at 8:20 pm EAT, and Simon Koech in Heat Three at 8:36 pm EAT. To qualify for the final, they must finish in the top five positions of their heats, or they will be eliminated.
